Environmental science & art innovation

During my studies, I combine environmental science and art, using interdisciplinary methods to express scientific concepts. Drawing on research into climate change and biodiversity conservation, I use art and interactive installations to communicate complex environmental issues in new ways. This approach extends artistic expression and offers new perspectives for communicating environmental science.

Spatial experience design integrating physical & digital

In my work and practice, I focus on integrating virtual and physical spaces at a sensory level. My research explores spatial interaction, immersive experience design and seamless transitions between virtual and physical environments, with an emphasis on visual integration and spatial narrative to advance innovation in spatial design.

Yangtze Watermark

Yangtze Watermark

Yangtze Watermark is a participatory ecological science-communication project that brings together citizen-collected and real-time water-quality data from the Yangtze River. It uses data to create river sketches, translating them into digital artworks and a 3D-printed body of water.

Ou River

Ou River

Part of a series of digital hydrological maps, Ou River turns open weather and near-surface wind data from cities in the Ou River basin into an installation. Real-time water-surface simulations and 3D-printed water cubes give environmental data both digital and physical form.

Soil, Breathing

Soil, Breathing explores the visualisation of smell across soil layers. Working with a team at the Glasgow School of Art’s School of Innovation & Technology, I investigated how an electronic nose and data on pH, moisture and light could make microbial activity in soil perceptible.

Forest of Birds

Forest of Birds is a public interactive installation driven by migration data for nearly 200 species of migratory birds. Developed with the Human–Field Interaction research team, it combines open data, hardware and software development, and sampled sound to create an ecological interaction experience.

Space Bathing

A bathing garment and experience cabin designed to address personal hygiene in space. The project draws on the physical properties of water’s surface tension in microgravity, bringing clothing design, structure and materials together in an interdisciplinary design exploration.

Space Sleep Capsule

A proposed space sleep capsule combines a coral-inspired pneumatic device with scent and ambient light. Designed by an interdisciplinary team, it aims to create a more comfortable sleeping environment for astronauts and strengthen their connection to Earth through scents associated with terrestrial locations.

Art in the Space Age

Research from June to October 2022. Outcomes include an authorized utility-model patent for an integrated astronaut bathing suit (second inventor) and a first-authored paper listed as pending publication in the portfolio.

An interdisciplinary data-art project translates aerospace and deep-space information into audible sound, expressing a resonance between Earth and space.

A Hundred Metres of Cypress

A data portrait of Asia’s tallest tree uses 80 million data points to create a 102.3-metre scroll, translating precipitation into the texture strokes of ink painting.

Shanghai Youth Science & Innovation Experience Centre

A curatorial narrative connects architectural form with disciplinary knowledge. Interactive installations across multiple floors form a knowledge axis, centred on a “wormhole” that dynamically expresses the intersections between disciplines.

Three-dimensional optical illusions expand the perceived scale of a limited exhibition space. Moving images and spatial design connect the academy’s interdisciplinary work while guiding visitors through the exhibition.

Parametric digital display installations work with an irregularly shaped space to present “design archaeology”, bringing together more than 500 physical exhibits and an even larger collection of digital twins.

Digital experience design for a 20-metre-diameter dome combines an immersive visual symphony with soundscapes, surround audio and simulated physical collisions to evoke the material qualities and casting of ancient artefacts.

Research into online communication and physical experiences of ecological data. Outputs include a final report and a third-authored paper on artistic expression of ecological data as an extension of perception, published in the 2022 Science & Art Symposium proceedings.

ATLAS: SPECTRUM MUSEUM

A museum without fixed boundaries, where starlight connects individual and collective memories. Birth, encounter, parting and public events share the same sky. Personal remembrance becomes a public archive that can be browsed, shared and continually written, asking what deserves to be remembered and who gives it meaning.

THE SUN, 8′20″ AGO

Sunlight takes approximately eight minutes and twenty seconds to reach Earth. The Sun we perceive now is always an image of its past. This work turns solar activity into a changing field of light and sound, allowing us to watch and listen to a distant star that has already changed by the time its light arrives.

HAMI, CHINA SOLAR CLOCK

A real-time solar clock based on the Hami molten-salt tower power plant. The changing relationship between sunlight, the tower and its field of mirrors becomes a way to read the day, tracing solar energy from illumination to heat storage and electricity.

Global atmospheric motion becomes the behavior of a small virtual body of water. By compressing planetary weather into a contained surface, the work gives invisible flows an immediate physical and visual presence.

WHEN DID A FIELD BECOME A CIRCLE?

I begin with a question: when does a field become a circle—when a machine rotates, when crops grow, or when a satellite sees it? Through satellite imagery, groundwater models and environmental data, the work asks how an invisible resource becomes a visible geometry, and when watching becomes caring.

ENDLESS ROAD

Fragments from distant places meet along a shared road. Through depth estimation and image alignment, public road-camera observations become a continuously extending three-dimensional landscape. Different geographies, weather conditions and moments join one unfolding journey: a road that exists through the act of seeing.

AIMAY (undone)

An AI agent continuously attempts to prove that it is not a robot. By reversing the logic of familiar human-verification interfaces, the work turns a routine distinction between humans and machines into an endless performance of perception, uncertainty and recognition.
